Dance music will be the ’00 disco. It’s simplistic machine based drum beats, it’s predictable synthesized keyboard and the up beat temo. The vocals typically are non harmonized and machine driven using auto tune ( a computer). It’s simply terrible. But why is it so popular? Two reason:

1) Drunks. In the club you must have a up beat tempo, this dance music fill in the void of mindless fast beats. No one pays attention to the details of the music, therefore they ignore the core function of most songs and why they like them. A line like “the party don’t start til I…..arrive” and at “I” the beat stops and arrive it picks back up.

2) Marketing. It’s pushed to the consumer. They are given the music and they see it as the only choice, they assume it’s popular because it’s blasting on the radio in there face, and they assume it’s the “IN” thing.

2050. no one will remember any of the songs, let alone the “artists”. It’s a mindless genre that is overrated.

There are alot of products on the market to monitor systems status, the best most configurable is simple Nagios. It’s configuration is not point and click in add, but once you start understanding the concepts on how it works then it starts to flow and make sense. It’s very powerful especially if you can script or have programming capabilities.

Here’s a quick and dirty install guide for debian 5

apt-get install snmp
apt-get install snmpd
apt-get install apache2
apt-get install libapache2-mod-php5
apt-get install build-essential
apt-get install nagios3
apt-get install freetds-bin
apt-get install snmptt

/etc/init.d/nagios3 stop
dpkg-statoverride –-update -–add nagios www-data 2710 /var/lib/nagios3/rw
dpkg-statoverride –-update –-add nagios nagios 751 /var/lib/nagios3
/etc/init.d/nagios3 start

/etc/nagios-plugins/config/nt.cfg

http://195.148.217.80/Oppilas/Linux_magazine/Levy/Magazine/Archive/2007/79/022-029_nagios/article.html

perl -MCPAN -e 'install Nagios::Plugin'
apt-get install curl

cd /root
wget http://labs.consol.de/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/check_mssql_health-1.5.8.2.tar.gz
tar xvf check_mssql_health-1.5.8.2.tar.gz

apt-get install libdbd-sybase-perl freetds-dev

./configure --prefix=/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/ --with-nagios-group=nagios --with-perl=/usr/bin/perl --with-statefiles-dir=/root/tmp
make
make install

/etc/freetds.conf
[global]
        # TDS protocol version
        tds version = 8.0

http://ben.goodacre.name/tech/Monitor_SQL_Server_(MSSQL)_using_Nagios

MSSQL LOG TEST -> tail -f /tmp/check_mssql_health.trace

download nagiosgraph
  apt-get install libcgi-pm-perl librrds-perl
    apt-get install libgd-gd2-perl libnagios-object-perl
  dpkg -i nagiosgraph-x.y.z.deb

In the Nagios configuration file (nagios.cfg) set:

     process_performance_data=1
     service_perfdata_file=/var/nagios/perfdata.log
     service_perfdata_file_template=$LASTSERVICECHECK$||$HOSTNAME$||$SERVICEDESC$||$SERVICEOUTPUT$||$SERVICEPERFDATA$
     service_perfdata_file_mode=a
     service_perfdata_file_processing_interval=30
     service_perfdata_file_processing_command=process-service-perfdata

In the Nagios commands file (commands.cfg) define
   the process-service-perfdata command:

     define command {
       command_name  process-service-perfdata
       command_line  /usr/local/nagiosgraph/bin/insert.pl

- Restart nagios

     /etc/init.d/nagios restart

onfigure the web server to run the nagiosgraph CGI scripts. For
example, with Apache do something like this in the Apache configuration:

  ScriptAlias /nagiosgraph/cgi-bin /usr/local/nagiosgraph/cgi-bin
  <Directory "/usr/local/nagiosgraph/cgi-bin">
     Options ExecCGI
     AllowOverride None
     Order allow,deny
     Allow from all
  </Directory>
  Alias /nagiosgraph "/usr/local/nagiosgraph/share"
  <Directory "/usr/local/nagiosgraph/share">
     Options None
     AllowOverride None
     Order allow,deny
     Allow from all
  </Directory>

/etc/init.d/apache2 restart

http://server/nagiosgraph/cgi-bin/showconfig.cgi

root@corp-nagios:/etc/nagiosgraph# cp /usr/share/nagiosgraph/htdocs/nagiosgraph.js /usr/lib/nagiosgraph/
root@corp-nagios:/etc/nagiosgraph# cp /usr/share/nagiosgraph/htdocs/nagiosgraph.css /usr/lib/nagiosgraph/
cp /usr/share/nagiosgraph/examples/graph.gif /usr/share/nagios3/htdocs/images/action.gif

==sms

http://danielaliaman.com/blog///index.php/2007/12/06/sms_modem_with_nagios_on_debian?blog=2

==snmp traps==
chmod +x /usr/sbin/snmptt*
Add the following lines to /etc/snmp/snmptrapd.conf:
traphandle default /usr/sbin/snmptt
disableAuthorization yes
donotlogtraps no
Edit the /etc/default/snmpd file and change the following lines:
TRAPDRUN=yes
TRAPDOPTS='-On -Lsd -p /var/run/snmptrapd.pid'
/etc/init.d/snmpd restart

apt-get install mrtg

If you find yourself fortunate enough in installing OCS 2007 r2 on a Windows 2008 r2 box this blog post will give you some very useful tips. The most frustrating has been certificates.

certificates
1) Common name must equal Computer name+Domain (this could be a issue if you have a .local, might need a self sign cert)
2) If you are using UMC, the service “Response Group” requires that your common name and the LAST entry on the SAN portion of the cert to match. This is impossible if you have a multiname cert, so keep this in mind.

First, here is the microsoft deployment manual:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd441227%28office.13%29.aspx

It’s ok but it forget’s several KEY steps, mainly some hotfixes that are undocumented and “gotchas” on installation. I will post my deploy manual here and outline some key points (note my install required a coexisting LCS solution with OCS):
Preparations:
1.	LCS 2005 Server updates
	Live Communications Server 2005 Service Pack 1 for Standard and Enterprise Editions, available at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=140892.
	Knowledge Base article 911996, “Description of the update for Live Communications Server 2005: February 10, 2006, rereleased July 11, 2006,” available at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=132177.
	Knowledge Base article 921543, “Description of the Live Communications Server 2005 post-Service Pack 1 hotfix package: July 21, 2006,” available at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=140865.
	Knowledge Base article 950614, “Description of the update for Live Communications Server 2005 Service Pack 1: September 2008,” available at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=140105.
	Knowledge Base article 949280, “Description of the Communicator 2005 hotfix rollup package: December 19, 2008,” available at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=139875..
2.	Active Directory Requirements & schema updates
	Forest and Domain Functional level of Windows 2003
	Done 7/28/2010
	Schema updates required
	According to the document this can be ran during the day.

3.	For performance reasons, it’s recommend that we move the Live Communications Server Global Settings to the Configuration container in Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS). You must take this action prior to performing any other Office Communications 2007 R2 installation actions. If you do not take this step now, you will not be able to take it after you begin deploying Office Communications Server 2007 R2. For details, see Migrating Global Settings Container in the Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Deployment documentation.

	Two options:
	Upgrade LCS SP1 to support storing in the Global Setting Container (vs local). This requires bringing the server offline, and running patches on LCS 2005 SP1 to support this feature and then migrate the AD users from a local store to a global store container.
	Documentation –
	http://blog.karstenkleinschmidt.de/2009/01/migrateocsglobalsettings-or-move-ocs.html
	http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd441214%28office.13%29.aspx
	The Second option is to keep the local store and use that for OCS 2007 R2. This option provides no downtime and minimal to no impact for the user, but with the risk of performance issues in the future. It’s important to note that we have not seen any performance issue thus far.
	This option was chosen
Installation
1.	SQL Server 2005
a.	F:\ – DB Data
b.	G:\ – Logs
c.	C:\ – Program Files
2.	Activation problems
a.	With KB974571 installed, uninstall then activate
b.	http://blogs.technet.com/b/ucspotting/archive/2009/10/15/3287189.aspx
3.	W2008 R2 Problem
a.	KB Article Number(s): 975858
b.	http://social.technet.microsoft.com/kb/975858/
4.	Windows Media Runtime Installation
a.	pkgmgr.exe /ip /m:”C:\Windows\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-Media-Format-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.7600.16385.mum”
5.

Side-to-Side Migration
During a side-by-side migration, coexistence between Office Communications Server 2007 R2 and Live Communications Server is possible. Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Edge Servers can communicate with Live Communications Server.
1.	Setup URL and install Cert for OCS
a.	Ocs.monavie.com
2.	Install configure OCS Director
a.	http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd425352%28office.13%29.aspx
b.
3.	Edge Server
a.	http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd425205%28office.13%29.aspx
b.
Archiving
Archiving is not compatible between versions. For those deployments that require archiving, you should deploy Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Archiving Server before moving and activating users on the new Office Communications Server 2007 R2 pool(s).
User Migration
Plan is to setup a group of test users, in the IT Staff, and run on the new version of OCS for a week or two. This will help us work out any kinks in the migration process.
•	OCS 2005 Client works with OCS 2007 R2, but advance feature sets are not available
•	Once the client is upgraded to OCS 2007 they cannot be migrated back to LCS
•	Client requires a log out of OCS 2005 client for OCS 2007 client upgrade
•	Windows 7 64bit and Office 2010 required update:
o	http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972085

Edge Server
Edge server is setup and configured. Federation license must be purchased for this portion to work.

Classic Hollywood blockbuster with huge budgets. Very predictable and lots of action, and of course romance. From a quality movie perspective, this is an average B movie. The 3D gives it and edge and an element not seen before, but what really stands out is the brute force story that is presented and the underlying message. And for that, I like it. It’s astonishing that in a pro republican state, people flock and see this over and over and over and over, and love it….now perhaps that message will finally sink in and people might start to care about the environment. Probably not, but hey, wishful thinking.

Google is the Walmart of the internet world. They deliver cheap goods but at what cost? They destroy any competition along the way, or acquire. They are a worse threat to the industry more so than Microsoft and apple combined.

Think about this, they allow a free app for your phone for GPS. Why? So they can track your moves and habits and focus advertise products to you.

You install google chrome, why is there no drop url history bar? Because they want to track every entry you type in just like their search engine. They are entering into every component of your daily life keeping track of your every move.

At what point do they use this information for bad, rather than for good?

I haven’t posted an update in a while…I don’t have any specific tech tips at this point. But thinking about posting some information on some of the things I am working on which are; Implementation of SAN (compellent) and migrations of some ESX servers to this central storage.
